Are you an aspiring jazz composer or arranger interested in taking your original tunes beyond clichés and predictability? In this workshop, we will examine works by composers who "broke the mold" and explore ways of injecting variety, denser textures, and development into a composition.
We'll look at the "business as usual" ways of dealing with melody, harmony, orchestration, rhythmic feel and form, and then explore ways to shake off the status quo for each, including the use of counterpoint, countermelody, reharmonization, varied solo forms, and breaking out of traditional instrumental roles, while maintaining the elements that make a composition "feel like"jazz.
Carey will also take students through his award-winning scores, with commentary on his compositional processes and philosophy. Open to all levels.
