InterMusic SF invites you to the 19th edition of SF Music Day, a free daylong celebration of Bay Area music hosted at the historic SF War Memorial + Performing Arts Center. Experience 20+ ensembles performing throughout the hall, in the Herbst Theatre, the Green Room, and the Taube Atrium Theater.
Spanning over 6 hours of live performances, SF Music Day showcases the depth and diversity of the Bay Area music community, featuring artists across classical, jazz, contemporary, traditional, global, interdisciplinary works, and more! Trumpeter and composer Ian Carey’s Wood Metal Plastic “combines the delicately calibrated dynamics of a chamber ensemble with alternating sections of close voicings and free improvisation” (Andrew Gilbert, Berkeleyside). The 7-piece group, which features stellar musicians from across the San Francisco Bay Area's creative music spectrum, tackles a challenging array of Carey's intricate compositions, which bridge the worlds of chamber music, straightahead jazz, and free improvisation, ranging from lush harmonies and counterpoint to spiky modernism.
The program will include music composed for the group’s debut album Strange Arts (2024), which refers to Carey's exploration of the aesthetic connections between his music and the eclectic creations of his father, the visual artist Philip Carey, and their shared fascination with density of detail and the areas where the organic world meets the artificial.
Carey, who was born in Binghamton, New York, and educated in California and New York City, has been active in the Bay Area creative music scene since 2001, performing with bandleaders including Lorin Benedict, Sam Bevan, Nathan Clevenger, John Daversa, Satoko Fujii, Phillip Greenlief, Lewis Jordan, Mark Levine, James Mahone, and Anne Sajdera; and in ensembles including Circus Bella, the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Anthony Brown’s Asian-American Orchestra, and the Lost Trio. He has received commissions from Chamber Music America and Intermusic SF, and was named one of “12 Bay Area Composers You Should Know” by SFJAZZ in 2018.
